How ceiling paint is worked out
Ceiling area = length × width. Wall height doesn't matter for a flat ceiling, so it isn't asked for.
Paint = (area − deductions) × coats ÷ coverage per coat.
Use the deduction field for anything you won't paint, such as a skylight or a large built-in fitting.
Worked example
A 14 ft × 12 ft ceiling is 168 sq ft. Two coats at an example coverage of 350 sq ft/US gal need 168 × 2 ÷ 350 = 0.96 US gal.
Limitations
This calculator covers flat ceilings only. It does not handle sloped, vaulted, or coved ceilings, and does not account for texture, primer, absorption, or color change. The example values are not manufacturer or professional recommendations.
